April & Pete 4eva

My cousin April is one of my favorite people in the world. She is the perfect balance of Leather & Lace and I love her for it. So when her then boyfriend, Pete, approached my sister about wanting to surprise propose to her, I was totally on board.

rock-19.jpg

It was literally -12 degrees outside. We were sure that April would try and reschedule the photoshoot that we had planned for them. But, being in the love that she was, April still wanted the photos (thank heavens!). So we traipsed out to my parents backyard and took the photos. We had to get to the point quickly because our fingers were going to fall off. Ha!

April and Pete, I’m so excited and happy for you! You are both so generous and loving - I’m so thankful God brought you two together in this crazy world. :) Can’t wait to put on my bridesmaid dress and celebrate with you!

We'll Have Another :)

I truly like almost everyone I meet. There is something about this couple though that not only do I like, but I admire. They are just so happy with each other. This is my second time photographing them, so I had an idea of what I was walking into. Last time big brother was just around a year or so old, and he was active (playing soccer - literally kicking the ball). He was also a tough cookie to crack - his smile appeared only when he truly meant it. Not that he wasn’t happy - he was clearly happy - just not the type to give his smiles away for free. :) This time was no different, and I love how much of his personality takes over some of the photos! And, the most common phrase in this whole blog is probably, “I love babies!” and, obviously, there was the newest family member so I was excited.

Big bro was explaining why he shouldn’t be in the family photo and it was so adorable and pathetic that it was also hilarious. The laughter you see here is one of the reasons I think this family is so great. :) And to be super clear, they weren’t being mean or making fun of him at all but were very loving and sweet towards him. :)

I know I shouldn’t have favorites, but if I did this family would be towards the top of the list for sure. This kiddo is all smiles, the parents are so easy going and happy - all of this adds up to a great photo session! It was literally sprinkling on us and it couldn’t even get to them. :)

I sincerely hope to see this family again! Until then… :)

We will always have NYC.

We will always have NYC.

Like many children, I love my mother dearly. She is a sweet woman, puts others first and always minimizes her own wants. She decided to do a “girls trip” not too long ago where she actually left the continental USA for the first time and into the Caribbean. I remember thinking, “My mom? Going on a cruise? No…”, but it happened. And she loved it. :) This must have started a travel bug for her because she started asking me and my sister about a different kind of “girls trip". We had a couple of ideas, but settled on NYC. I LOVE NYC. My sister had only passed through it and my mom hadn't been.

McSorley’s Old Ale House was one of our favorite things that we did. Mostly because we met two life long New Yorkers. The older gentleman had lived only a few blocks away since he was married - nearly 60 years! He had purchased the apartment on a teacher’s salary at the time. Can you imagine getting a 2 bedroom apartment in downtown NYC on a teacher salary now?! Incredible. They were extremely friendly, warm and entertaining. They convinced us to get the cheese - and they were right on the money. Thank you for making our time at McSorley’s so incredibly memorable. I hope I’m cool enough that I can make someone’s vacation highlight reel in the future!

My sister Brooke just strolling down the street like no big deal.

Brooke made these really fun, really goofy video reviews of everything we did where we all pitched in. It is funny how photos and videos can make it feel like you are there all over again.

My favorite experience was the Tenement Museum. It is awesome. It is an old apartment building with a big history. If you are a nerd like me and like to imagine what it was like to live during different time periods, this is the place for you! They have a ton of different tours, so I will be back again. We also did a Spirit Boat Tour around the city, went to the Top of the Rock, the 9/11 Memorial (which was incredible and totally heart wrenching), Aladdin on Broadway, and everywhere in between. I also got to see my high school friend, Stephanie, who lives in Brooklyn. Last time I went to NYC I stayed in Brooklyn and very much like Brooklyn.

Thanks for the good times. :) Brooke, Mom - we’ll always have New York. :)

Dear Diary, Summer 2017 Recap #2 - Concerts, Fests & Shows

Dear Diary, Summer 2017 Recap #2 - Concerts, Fests & Shows

I cannot reiterate enough how life changing this summer was for me.  One of the things that hit me in the face is how much I LOVE doing things.  Some folk's idea of fun is Netflix-n-Chill at home and, while I can enjoy this sometimes, what I enjoy the most is getting out of the house.  This summer I did so many things for the first time and I can't wait to do it all again.  Here are a few highlights...

Lake Street Dive at Thalia Hall

Lake Street Dive at Thalia Hall

Lake Street Dive was incredible!  The opener was Lawrence and I think they are going to be something big.  The lead female singer was unbelievably talented.  This is the first time I asked someone I liked on a date.  Should've seen me try to dress - it was a group effort.  While the date went well, but it wasn’t meant to be in the end. :)

One day I woke up from a nap to a text from my friend Lindsey.  The text went something like this... "Hey I won tickets to a show called Hamilton, want to go?" Needless to say, the excitement instantly woke me up. The show as amazing!

I received free tickets to the James Taylor concert at Wrigley Field, so I took my friend (and now roommate) Lindsey. We spent a good amount of time together that summer - the summer she turned 30 (note the tacky but awesome pub golf photo above). I also went to my first full out rock show - Royal Blood. If you decide to listen to them keep this in mind - there are only 2 people making all of that noise! I didn’t know if I would like it, but I LOVED it. There was even a "mini mosh” which I did not participate it, but it was fun to witness. I saw my first show at Tinley Park with Paul McCartney. He played the hits. :) And, of course, went to several ball games.

Summer 2017 was a game changer. I started serving (again), met new people and went to a lot of new events. Fall was closing in too close…

Dear Diary, Summer Recap 1 - April & Maifest in Lincoln Square

Dear Diary, Summer Recap 1 - April & Maifest in Lincoln Square

Without going into detail, my life changed a little unexpectedly this spring and threw me into a bit of a whirlwind.  Thankfully, the changing of the seasons brought a breath of fresh air.  I can easily mark the date of change - it all started when my cousin and best friend, April, came into town.

Note that this is definitely a dear diary post and not a photography post. All of these pictures are thanks to a very average droid camera phone. :)

Enjoying the Bridges of Chicago

Enjoying the Bridges of Chicago

I was lucky to grow up with my cousins.  I didn't realize how special it was not only to have cousins close in age but close in proximity until I was an adult.  April, only a few years younger than me, has always been one of my best friends - even if she didn't always agree.  :) Ha!

Cindy's Rooftop Bar

Cindy's Rooftop Bar

Sure we grew up together and we are similar in many ways, but there are a few key ways that we couldn't be any more different.  Most noteworthy, I live in Chicago while she voluntarily chooses to live in the middle of nowhere - and I don't mean a small town, I mean a 15 minute drive from the smallest town where she owns what I describe as a whole woods butted up against a county forest.  The first time I was there we had a bonfire.  I looked in the distance and saw a light.  Thinking it was a neighbor's light I said, "Oh, they aren't too far away."  ...the light was the moon.  While the country is peaceful, it also can give me the creeps.  I have nicknamed her location Murderville, which she responds that I - living in Chicago - obviously am the one living in danger.

She signed up for the Color Run with her friends near Chicago, which gave her the perfect reason to drive down early and hang out with me!  I took the day off from photographing babies and we went about town.  The adventure started in Wicker Park where we ate pizza and drank beer at Piece Pizza - one of my favorite places.

Then we headed downtown and hung out on the River Walk, went to Chicago Athletic Association (where I won a game of pool for the first time in my life and introduced April to mezcal), walked over to Cindy's Rooftop to enjoy the view, down to Millennium Park where Goose Island had bags set up (and April kicked my sad little behind) and then Lindsey W - someone you're bound to run into more now that this blog is personal - invited us up to Maifest in Lincoln Square.  So we jumped on the Brown Line and headed up!

Margaritas on the River Walk on a Beautiful Day

Margaritas on the River Walk on a Beautiful Day

We drank German beer, danced the polka, met new people and had fun together.  It was an important day because it was the first I felt normal in a few weeks.  Like the way only close family and friends can, April effortlessly lifted the weight off my shoulder and reminded me who I was must when it was needed.  To thank her I'm going to share this video which highlights something April and I do have in common - incredible dance skills.

April, you brighten my life.  I love and appreciate you more than words can express.  Thank you for kicking off what turned out to truly be one of the best summers of my life.

XOXO,
Brittany (your favorite cousin)

Where did summer go?!

I took a bit of a break this summer and wowzers - TIME FLEW!!!  I cannot believe we are already through half of September.  These past 6 months have been full of change and at times I feel like I've barely been able to hold on.  With that said, it has been one of the most incredible summer's of my life.

Headshot taken by the very talented Vanessa Thurber.  If you're ever in the Pacific Northwest look her up - she's extremely talented.

Headshot taken by the very talented Vanessa Thurber.  If you're ever in the Pacific Northwest look her up - she's extremely talented.

I know I haven't written a lot about me yet, but I am an eternal wanderer full of wanderlust.  While I continuously think about what I have next on the rocket-docket for traveling, I am not someone who has their life planned out.  I don't know what is next and (most of the time) I am thankful to not have a blue print.

This summer I decided to leave my full time photography job with a third party company photographing babies to return to serving.  I absolutely prefer photography to waiting tables, but waiting tables has more scheduling flexibility.  Plus, after 2 years of photographing newbies every day I felt my passion grow stale.  It was time to bail!

I don't know how long I'll be serving, if I'll try to expand Rock 1 Photography to be my full time gig, or if I'll explore a different career option altogether.  However, I will definitely keep Rock 1 Photography going because I am not ready to leave my passion for photography just yet.  :)  We aren't finished here by a long shot.

Now I'm going to work on blogging some of the things I did this summer.  Stay tuned in...

XOXOXO,
Brittany

Nicole and I had met several times prior to the photoshoot.  Each time I'm with her I get to know her a little better, but this is the first time I really spent a lot of time looking at her.  Wow, she is so beautiful!!!  How did I not realize how stunning she was before?

Seriously though, I could photograph this little guy all day long!

Jeff and Nicole brought an element of calmness to the session.  It always helps when you can be relaxed - it's easier to be yourself in the photos and to get more candid pictures.

Recently we exchanged head shots.  However, this isn't the first time I photographed this beautiful lady.  She is a wife and a mother to two adorable kiddos.  Late last year she asked me to take some photos for her holiday card.  Here is a little snap shot of my favorites.

Vanessa and I have really clicked, so when the idea to exchange headshots came up I was pumped.  Not only is Vanessa an amazing photographer bound to make me look much better than I do, but she is plain fun to be around!

I laughed the entire time.  She is so much fun!

Vanessa's art is magic!  I wish she wasn't moving back to Seattle because I'd love to work with her more and hang out.  It's hard to find quality people you connect with so well!  If you are ever in the pacific northwest, look her up.  Believe me, it'll be worth it!

These are definitely not traditional headshots, more like two friends having an amazing time laughing together.  :)

This was taken at the entrance to the underground parking lot at Lurie Gardens.  We must have had at least a dozen people walk past us wondering what we were laughing about.  Totally worth it.

Nicole & Josh are so in love!  I met Nicole and Josh at a Chicago coffee shop earlier this year.  I knew that I'd have fun working with them when Nicole came with wet hair after her hair appointment gone long.  :)  Anyone that knows me knows that this is my type of girl!  I was thrilled when they sent me the email saying they too wanted me to be their wedding photographer.

Nicole & Josh have been in the making for years.  Josh proposed to Nicole in one of her favorite Chicago spots - the Lincoln Park Zoo.  So, naturally, we set up the engagement photos to capture this special place.

Welcome Baby Luka

Welcome Baby Luka

Like most creatives, I've spent plenty of time working in the industry.  While serving may not be the most glorious job, there is something about the hustle and bustle that is addictive.  Plus, people in the industry are interesting because they tend to be transient - most people don't plan on staying in the same place permanently and have a ton of varied plans for the future.  This is how I met Rachel.

Rachel was the bar manager at Kinmont in it's hay-day.  She is so easy to connect with, we hit it off right away.  :)  Like a true bar manager, Rachel had spent years in the industry.  In fact, that's how she met her now husband.  They were married last fall, and this spring welcomed their newest addition - baby Luka.
