This friendly family wanted to tackle the Christmas card. But mom wanted to start with a few of her and the newest member of the family. Can you blame her? This is one seriously beautiful baby boy.

Who doesn’t love the holidays?! Holiday photos are a perfect excuse to document your family each year. It can seem like a huge effort, but the photos usually take less than an hour and I’m typically able to turn these around quickly to ensure your card hits the mail in time.

Jimmy's Family is Cool

Unfortunately, my family is a solid 6 1/2 hour car drive away (I don’t have a car) or a short flight. So for holidays, I can’t always go home. Fortunately, I have a wonderful boyfriend that I love spending time with and his family is pretty cool. Double bonus, they are closer AND he has a car.

Jimmy’s mom wanted a family photo for their Christmas card. She previously tried to get one at a graduation party, but there was a keg and a shoeless family member and it was a whole thing. So Thanksgiving was the new aim.

I love living in the city. When I meet families that live in the city it gives me a little hope that maybe I can stay a little longer. :) This city-living family wanted a photo for a holiday card. It was my first time meeting this gang, and I am so happy I did! They are a (clearly) beautiful family and they were sweet to boot!

Oh Baby!

This was my first time photographing this babe. First thing I thought was that she was SO CUTE. First thing mom and dad said was that the week before she went through her first wave of stranger danger and had stopped smiling in front of strangers - ha! :)

rock-15.jpg

I’m pretty sure I looked like a crazy person trying to get her to smile. At one point I think I was jumping and waving my arms while singing the hokey-pokey. #ridiculous

rock-34.jpg

My efforts proved to be futile.

rock-42.jpg

Luckily this little lady’s parents were also in the mood to do what it took to make her smile, and we finally created a small miracle. :) Isn’t she SO CUTE?!?!?!

rock-12.jpg

Are you kidding me with her hair? I can’t get over it. It’s too much cuteness to handle!

Meeting this babe was definitely a highlight. She’s so stinking cute, I hope to see her again!

The Bravest Family

This family cracks me up. The parents are some of the most relaxed and seemingly happy people you could meet with great style to boot!!! This is extra great when one of the kiddos (big brother) could care less about photos/smiling/posing/sitting still. I think it is safe to say that these parents know their kids very well and it is obvious that they love, love, LOVE them. :)

We have had some bad luck with weather for the past few shoots. Last year it was rainy. This year we had to reschedule and, unfortunately, the date landed on the first day in the teens/early 20s. It felt FRIGID! They decided that they wanted to get-it-done and went for it despite the weather. This makes them one of the bravest families! The session lasted 20 minutes - which I consider a win. :)

Roommate Weekend

Roommate Weekend

Warning - personal post that might make me look less cool… or significantly more cool? It is hard to tell. ;)

One year in college there were 7 of us that rented one large house just outside the edge of campus. I think we can all say that it was a very memorable year and that it sort of solidified our friendships. Each year since we have gotten together for a quick weekend with surprisingly good attendance. It has been 12 years since we moved into that house (wow - I really am getting older). I really think that each year we become more fun… and much, much better looking.

From spring 2007 - the year we lived together. I literally did not have a dress at the house - ha! I was not a “fancy” college girl… if I could turn back time. :)

From spring 2007 - the year we lived together. I literally did not have a dress at the house - ha! I was not a “fancy” college girl… if I could turn back time. :)

Truthfully - and obviously - we weren’t a vain group. We were more concerned about having fun, being ourselves and being friends. Thankfully, I don’t think any of us turned a sharp corner to vain-hood but we all got a little (ahem - a TON) more attractive. :)

Our Happy Bunch

Our Happy Bunch

So we usually just sit around, drink coffee, talk about Gilmore Girls and chat about our lives. That’s really the best part. But we usually squeeze in one or two activities. This year we first went to the Public Market in Milwaukee.

highlights-74.jpg

It was extraordinarily disappointing. (and cold) It was only disappointing because they made it sound like there were going to be an onslaught of outdoor activities and vendors… but they must have chickened out from the chilly air.

We picked up a few bloodies with beer backs (the true Wisconsin way) and that made everything seem better. :)

Even though the Public Market itself was disappointing, we always find a way to have a good time. It couldn’t possibly hold us down. :) Next up - Chinese Lights!

“Strong Tea, Deep Friendship” Thank you Panda.

“Strong Tea, Deep Friendship” Thank you Panda.

That was the “exciting” portion of RMW. Ha! I’d say the best part is just spending time relaxing with the people who know a different, older version of me than my Chicago friends. There is something relaxing when you don’t have to explain yourself or worry about catching up on all the things (and between 7 women who are leading drastically different lives there could be a zillion things) and you can just enjoy your time together.

Holly’s husband picked us up a local homemade cake. It was delicious. Then Holly told us that it is sold in a local gas station and we all about lost it laughing. Of course, the delicious homemade cake was sold in the gas station - ha!

highlights-94.jpg

Without going into essay or providing video evidence, there really isn’t a good way to describe just how different we are and always have been from each other. You’ll just have to believe me. :)

Ladies, I love you all and I’m so thankful that we decided to share a 6 bed/1 bath house over a decade ago. Proud to be called your friend, and hope to do so for the next 70 years! (Yes, we are all living to be over 100 - not just Cas!)

Saugatuck, Michigan

Saugatuck, Michigan

I have always wanted to go to a Michigan beach town but haven’t found the time. I don’t know if anyone reading is a Chicagoan, but summers here rule. There are tons of festivals, rooftops and - ta da - Lake Michigan. After I factor in everything I want to do, that leaves around 10 minutes of unaccounted time. But this year I was determined.

So, I convinced my wonderful boyfriend that we needed to set aside a weekend. The conversation went something like this…

Me - “Want to go to a Michigan beach town this summer?”

Jimmy - “Sure. When?”

Me - “June is already filled, so is July… so is August… How about September 14th?”

Jimmy - “Sounds good.”

Needless to say, I barely won the argument. :)

There are a lot of cool beach towns in Michigan. It was hard to pick, but we ended up with Saugatuck. We drove up late and stayed at a fancy Best Western (complete with fireplace) on Thursday night. The night was spent talking, drinking and endlessly snacking because - ya know - vacation. :)

Jimmy had to work on Friday, but I had a chance to explore… and a chance to meet my squirrel friend. Ha!

He is smiling, but it is saying, “I’m working, move along!” :)

He is smiling, but it is saying, “I’m working, move along!” :)

We were able to check into Lake Shore Resort just outside of town that afternoon. It was so much better than I had expected!!!

saugatucky-108.jpg

Our room was (obviously) immediately filled with our many things. However, if you are able to see past our loads of stuff you can tell just how stylish and updated the rooms are.

rock-32.jpg

The best part of this place was the insane view of Lake Michigan. It is odd how the water on Chicago’s side seems so mucky when on this side we could see to the bottom of the water equally as far out as our eyes could focus. Incredible. They had kayaks at the bottom of the stairs to be used at will. Obviously, we choose the two person kayak. #romance Also, neither of us had ever kayaked so it seemed like the smart choice.

replace-1.jpg

The sunsets we caught were cloudless. At first I was half excited that there was going to be a sunset and half bummed that there wouldn’t be any clouds at all to spread the light. My worry, per the norm, was ridiculous. The sunset was perfect.

Sunset was beautiful, company was pretty good too. :)

On Cold Brew and Turning 33...

On Cold Brew and Turning 33...

So my birthday is coming up and I’ll be 33. I know that 33 isn’t OLD, but it isn’t 22 either. There are parts of me that have always been overly and irritatingly responsible (hello, no underage drinking, no sneaking onto the college football field, not even a speeding ticket to date), but there are a few parts that I haven’t been great about growing out of. The one I promised my wonderful boyfriend - who has in no way actually pressured me or even suggested this - was to give up my daily (yes, daily) iced latte Starbucks addiction… after I turned 33. I simply am not ready to be that responsible until the day after.

Something about going to Starbucks everyday makes me feel really good. I’m not a great morning person, but putting in the mobile order always helps me get out of bed. I walk to the store in the rain and the snow, when I’m busy and when have nothing going on (which is never, btw). It is my favorite and most reliable ritual.

But it is expensive. Ridiculous, actually. I spend $5.58 every day. That is over $2000/year. I love my ritual, but maybe it is time to see if I can break up my routine.

We had a serious stare down. I waited as long as I can.

We had a serious stare down. I waited as long as I can.

I stubbornly (and with great annoyance) ordered a mid-level cold brew from Amazon along with a coffee grinder. When I came I left it sitting away from my kitchen for a week out of child-like pettiness. Ha! Yesterday I finally did my first test run because if I don’t figure it out before the day after I’m 33, I’m certain I’ll just run back up to Starbucks. (The 2 block walk is totally worth it.)

After walking to Starbucks this morning and getting my iced, soy latte, I decided to try it out.

Here goes nothing!

Here goes nothing!

…taking pretty pictures of it did not make it more appealing to me…

…taking pretty pictures of it did not make it more appealing to me…

Another stare down followed.

Another stare down followed.

Practically begging me to try it.

Practically begging me to try it.

It was okay. A little bitter. I’ll definitely want to work on it before I’m satisfied, but I drank it. I mean, it was still coffee. :)

I know this post comes off like I am a bit of a spoiled brat, but I really don’t have that many things that I waste money on. I don’t get mani/pedis, massages, go to expensive restaurants, take ubers/cabs everywhere, buy a new wardrobe every season… I just like to go to Starbucks. Like all good things, I suppose it is time for this one to end. Or at least pause. After all, there is always the lottery. :)

So 33, stay away as long as you’d like… but when you inevitably come for me, at least I’ll still have coffee.

Cumberland, Wisconsin

I am from Cumberland, Wisconsin - Home of the Beavers, Former Rutabaga Capital of the World and The Island City. My mother was born there, and my father was born in a town only a few miles away. Their parents were born within a few miles of where I grew up and so were theirs, etc.

My hometown pride is thick and I’m thankful to have grown up where I did. Cumberland is a beautiful backdrop filled with clean lakes, a quaint mainstream and (generally) friendly people. I soaked it all in and - as many of you that know me are aware - I enjoyed participating in almost everything I could get my hands on. While I’ll always think of Cumberland fondly, it just isn’t as home to me as the city life. Visiting, however, is ALWAYS a highlight.

The field across the street is usually speckled with cows.
